Vintage 2011

LATE AUGUST: Another year, another harvest, once again different from the previous ones.
What remains the same is our passion for our work, as always we wish to obtain the maximum from the grapes which Nature gives us. The growing season of the grapes has, in various occasions, gone through periods of rapid acceleration and brusque stops. In particular a very warm early spring, which greatly advanced the various phases of vine and grape development, then rain and lower than usual temperatures during the first part of the summer, which once again slowed down ripening and growth. In mid-August, instead, heat, truly scorching heat. W are already ready with the harvesting shears to begin with the Merlot.

SEPTEMBER 2011: We have picked our first grapes.
The cellars, already perfectly neat and orderly before picking began, have received the first bunches which various industrious hands have placed in the small packing cases which, after a brief ride on the tractor with its trailing cart, arrived in the cellars. It was still very hot in the vineyard, and it is easy to imagine the relief which the grapes felt when they went into the casks, suitably cooled to receive them Now another of nature’s wonders must occur: the sugars present in the grapes, must be transformed, with the aid of native yeasts, into alcohol … a new wine is being born.

Wines

Our wines originate from vines cultivated according to knowledge both ancient and new, manual skills and attention to understanding what the plants are trying to express. They are the fruit of difficult and often economically disadvantageous growing procedures, like not using chemical weedkiller or removing excess bunches. These are choices we make with pride in our work and the conviction that our products are good and healthy, and will therefore satisfy those searching for real and genuine quality.

Serving with food

In every great wine-producing area the type of wine is also reflected in the traditional local dishes. Our red wines are robust and well-structured yet elegant and aromatic. As the best Tuscan tradition dictates they are particularly well-suited to flavoursome first courses like pasta with meat sauce and, above all, roasted red meats best enhance the combination of food and wine. If you prefer something lighter – of sorts! – we recommend cured meats (best of all Tuscan, because their particular flavour and good fat component go well with the tannins in Sangiovese) or mature cheeses (like our local Pecorino di Pienza).

But we are convinced of one thing above all: all combinations of food and wine are acceptable, as long as those serving and tasting like them. There’s always an excuse to open a bottle of wine we like, and why let the question of serving with food hold you back? If you really have nothing suitable… just drink the wine, for the sheer pleasure of sharing a glass of wine with friends, the fruit of a family’s passion and labour.
